Charles Spencer’s London Townhouse Inspires New Collection by Theodore Alexander

Charles Spencer, 9th Earl Spencer, brother of Princess Diana, has launched a beautiful new collection with luxury furniture maker Theodore Alexander called Spencer London. This new, traditional collection is modeled on the actual furniture in Lord Spencer’s townhouse in London and is designed for living with classical pieces in a today’s world.

A Bit of History

Lord Spencer explains that his original collection with Theodore Alexander released 20 years ago, titled Althorp, was based on traditional and historic furnishings in his family’s 500-year-old mansion north of London. The new Spencer London Collection is slightly different, reflecting the furniture used in his urban townhouse in Mayfair, London.

This London home, once the childhood home of Winston Churchill, has a more metropolitan feel. “Nothing too stuffy,” he remarked. Lord Spencer explains that he wanted furnishings that look classically lovely, but without the worry of breakage, maintenance and upkeep. These pieces are usable yet high quality, with wood inlay and metalwork, blending the old with a modern finish. Lord Spencer described his style: “I like to live with classically lovely pieces that aren’t fragile.”

Showcasing Beloved Furnishings

Highlighting his favorite chair, Lord Spencer says, “It’s a simple, classic look. The collection has a darker wood look and a lighter option too. I love the contrast of textures in pieces like the marble top table with metalwork and a wooden base. It’s got a modern flourish but is based on quality.” He also mentioned the cocktail cabinet: “Not just because the English drink too much,” he joked, “but because it’s a very fine piece. It feels right when you open the door.”

Artfully Blending the Old with the New

Lord Spencer emphasized the collection’s cohesiveness. “The cornerstones of this collection, like the dining room table, show the quality of the metalwork and woodwork. It all hangs together very nicely.”

Timeless Elegance Avoids the Trendy

The Spencer London collection by Lord Spencer and Theodore Alexander integrates classical elegance with modern practicality. If you’re seeking high-quality, timeless home furnishings, take a look at this collection. These classic pieces blend the old with the new, designed specifically for contemporary living.
