Thom Filicia: Environmentally Thoughtful Design
Thom Filicia encourages consumers to be eco-friendly and reminds us that going green it isn’t just about the paints you use, the food you eat, or the amount you recycle. It’s also about the finishes used on your furniture and the way your environment grows organically as a lifestyle and a point of view. Filicia’s collection at Vanguard Furniture embraces his environmental point of view by offering eclectic pieces that can work as well-styled additions to any decor.
Ask Ellen - Color How-Tos: Neutral Base + Pops of Color
Many of today’s most popular designers are masters at combining basic design elements in neutral tones and accenting them with pops of color to create interiors that are chic and harmonious… as well as easy and relatively inexpensive to update. Here’s how they do it.
First, they create a basic backdrop with excellent-quality natural upholstery and other fabrics, light, neutral walls, and simple, well-crafted floor coverings.
Then, they choose a few statement pieces; things like a dramatic painting, an heirloom rug, a unique chandelier, or a piece of upholstery covered in an intriguing print.
Finally, they select accent pillows, linens, artwork, and other accessories that complement the statement pieces they’ve chosen. Imagine how easy it would be to get a whole new look in a space like that! You’d just switch statement pieces and accessories and voilá! – an entirely different color scheme and mood. No need for reupholstering all of your furniture or re-painting every wall.
And by using statement pieces and accessories to make a color impact, it’s easy to swap color schemes in rooms in your home by “shopping in your home.” The contemporary art piece and accessories in hues of blue and green that were in your living room might work beautifully in your guest bedroom; while the antique mirror and silver accessories from the guest room could be elegant in your living room.
How have you seen the neutral + pops of color technique used?
Have you tried shopping in your own home? What worked? What didn’t?

Eco-Paint Is Better for You, Better for the Environment
Recently I saw a yard sign for an “environmentally friendly painting company” that was apparently doing some work for a homeowner.
Trends around the Web: Bursting with Color
Over-the-top color will brighten your spirits, elegant and precise interior design will inspire you, and homeless shelters made from recycled trash will keep your décor challenges in perspective.
Ask Ellen: Are Wall Coverings Back to Stay in Interior Design?
If you’re like me, you spent countless hours removing old wallpaper from the walls in your home, sanding down the walls, and painting them. After the 1980’s metallic paper fad passed, it seemed like every designer of any caliber was recommending paint, not paper, for a stylish look. But it looks like we’re coming around to wall coverings again. I’m seeing them everywhere on design blogs and in the print media.
