Ask Ellen - Color How-Tos: Neutral Base + Pops of Color
Many of today’s most popular designers are masters at combining basic design elements in neutral tones and accenting them with pops of color to create interiors that are chic and harmonious… as well as easy and relatively inexpensive to update. Here’s how they do it.
First, they create a basic backdrop with excellent-quality natural upholstery and other fabrics, light, neutral walls, and simple, well-crafted floor coverings.
Then, they choose a few statement pieces; things like a dramatic painting, an heirloom rug, a unique chandelier, or a piece of upholstery covered in an intriguing print.
Finally, they select accent pillows, linens, artwork, and other accessories that complement the statement pieces they’ve chosen. Imagine how easy it would be to get a whole new look in a space like that! You’d just switch statement pieces and accessories and voilá! – an entirely different color scheme and mood. No need for reupholstering all of your furniture or re-painting every wall.
And by using statement pieces and accessories to make a color impact, it’s easy to swap color schemes in rooms in your home by “shopping in your home.” The contemporary art piece and accessories in hues of blue and green that were in your living room might work beautifully in your guest bedroom; while the antique mirror and silver accessories from the guest room could be elegant in your living room.
How have you seen the neutral + pops of color technique used?
Have you tried shopping in your own home? What worked? What didn’t?

have been away from designing for a while due to traveling. I am now purchasing a small home in Florida. It is near the beach but not on it but I would like to make the interior ‘Beach y’
I thought of painting the walls white, with vertical strips of molding ( about 1.5 inches wide) from floor to ceiling also painted white (eggshell).
I have no furniture so plan to shop at flea markets etc. Using tropical prints and natural accessories.
Will the white pain ted walls look too stark?
