Ask Ellen - Are Peacock Feathers Still in Fashion or "For the Birds"?
Marina asks, “I decorated a floor vase with one big peacock feather and few spiraled natural wooden strawes painted gold. My friend said those feathers are old-fashioned. I like it. Could you tell me if my friend is right and this arrangement is not modern anymore. Thank you.”

You say you like the arrangement so maybe you really should ask. "Am I trying to be ‘in style’, or live in an environment I like?" One of the best things about fashion right now, whether it’s clothing or your home, is that there is a style that’s right for each person and there is NOT just one look.

One of the trends both in home and clothing is a bohemian chic look and that’s not a look that is comfortable for everyone. So bottom line… I think your home should reflect what YOU like and want to live in and it may NOT be what fashionistas call "trendy" but it’s the place you love to come home to each day.

If you’d like, send a picture of the arrangement and we can ask what others think. Either way, let me know what you decide to do!

Update! Marina graciously sent in a picture of her vase with the peacock feather.

The arrangement is a retro look and is shown sitting against a blank wall. My suggestion is you look at it in context with the rest of the room. Does is go with the other furnishings and look in the room or are you displaying it as a piece unto itself? If it’s a stand alone piece or is very different than the rest of the room than your friends comment about it being out of date could be correct. Remember though: you live in the house. If you love the piece, keep it. It’s not my style, but I appreciate all types of artwork, music and decorating styles.

P.S. A year ago, we featured peacock feathers as a hot trend, interpreted on furniture as paint, prints, carving, embroidery, even carpet!

Hi Ellen, thank you very much for choosing my question. Give me some time and I will deffinitely post my arrangement. As for now I am going to enjoy it. Thanks again.
I cannot agree with you more Ellen. This is your home and you should style it the way it makes you happy. Now if your friends impression of your home is what makes you happy than you might want to switch it up. I personally love peacock feathers in floor vases, but it really depends on the context of it’s surroundings. You may want to switch up the wooden straws to highlight the feather more.
