Does Your Home Décor Suffer from Lack of Organization?

A designer friend was recently showing off her newly remodeled kitchen, and I was really impressed with how well-thought-out the entire space was. One thing that just made perfect sense was that everything to the left of the sink was devoted to food preparation activities, while everything to the right was devoted to cooking the food. This is exactly why you should hire a designer when you’re tackling an interior design project; they can help you in more ways than you know. Not only is my friend’s kitchen much more efficient than it was, but it’s far less cluttered and far more organized than it was before!

This won’t come as a surprise to those of you who know me personally, but I am NOT naturally organized. Getting organized is a constant challenge for me. Experts I’ve talked keep assuring me that it can be done – I just have to make small changes one at a time until being organized is a new habit.

Here are a few resources that may help you in your struggle to get – and stay – organized:

• Look online. My quick search turned up a couple of great sites, including http://www.lifeorganizers.com, http://www.hgtv.com/topics/organization/index.html, and http://www.homeorganizationhelp.com/, just to list a few.

• At your local library or bookstore, you’ll find some genuinely useful books like: File…Don’t Pile by Pat Dorff, Organizing Plain and Simple by Donna Smallin, and Eliminate Chaos by Laura Leist.

• The National Association of Professional Organizers has a great website, but also it has a directory of organizing professionals that’s not just arranged by metro area but also by the type of organization needs you have (home office, kitchen, paperwork, and so on).

One caveat: There’s no perfect one-size-fits-all formula for getting organized. Whether you hire a professional to help you or tackle your organization challenges yourself, your solutions should meet your unique, specific needs.

I’m trying to follow the advice I’ve been given…one small step at a time. Let me know if there’s an especially frustrating room or space you’d like me to devote some attention to. I’ll see if I can find some assistance for you (and me!).
