Decorating for the OTHER Holidays
One family I know decorates their kitchen in a theme for each family member’s birthday. Another has a special birthday plate and chair slipcover that are used on each person’s birthday. In my house, we play “hot and cold” until the birthday girl or guy finds the gift.
I love the meaningful traditions that families have for their special days, and it’s so easy to have unique and meaningful celebrations throughout the year without spending a fortune on over-commercialized décor. A few ideas off the top of my head: • On Memorial Day, you could do more than just hang out your American flag. You could make a donation to a veteran’s group or do something special for a vet you know personally.
• Valentine’s Day is typically a couples-centric day, but why not embrace the broader concept of love? Go volunteer at an animal shelter or elder-care center.
• If you’re lucky in love, create a special ritual for your anniversary – whether it’s breakfast in bed, a quiet walk in the park together, or a raucous party with friends, make the day a true celebration.
• Look at other cultures for inspiration. Celebrate a new holiday or special event – this can be a great way to get kids actively involved in learning something new.
