Whether you’re a DIY maven or a diva, keep these closet design tips in mind:
Decide how much SPACE you need.
Keep existing closets, enlarge the existing space, or remodel an adjacent bedroom for a splurge. I have a friend who turned a 4th bedroom into a closet/laundry room combo just by adding a door and single dividing wall – the result is an über-functional space that she loves and uses every day!
Use built-ins.
Give your shoe collection a happy home with custom shelving. Use drawer systems for ties, hats, intimates, and jewelry. Use vertical space to store bulky items and off-season duds.
Incorporate furniture.
Decide if you would like to include seating, chests, armoires, or an ironing board. Then, be sure to allow plenty of room in the closet for the furniture you need.
Plan new closets around your wardrobe
… rather than designing first and filling later. Men and women need different storage solutions – measure your longest garments, tallest boots, and any unique garments before you install racks and shelving.
Give special consideration to lighting.
Incandescent bulbs get too hot for small spaces, and natural light causes fading. Use compact fluorescents in the space, and protect garments from sun damage if there are windows or skylights in the design.
