Interior Designer Myths Unveiled
I’d like to dispel a few of the myths that I encounter regularly about interior design.
Myth #1: I can’t afford it!
Help is available at all price points. Whether you choose an independent design firm or choose to just work with the on-staff designers at your favorite furniture retailer, a designer will help you do several things:
- Discuss your budget and listen carefully to help you determine what your priorities are.
- Show you options you might not have considered and help you avoid costly mistakes.
- Get trade discounts for furniture and fabrics and pass them along to you.
Myth #2: A professionally designed room won’t reflect my personality
One of any designer’s most important goals is to translate the essence of her client’s lifestyle in to a cohesive, beautiful, and functional space. Right after you discuss your budget, your designer will explore every aspect of your daily life to get an understanding of YOUR style. She might even dig through your closet to capture your fashion sense! And if she’s doing her job well, she’ll incorporate the furniture and accessories you already own and love into new looks.
Myth #3: It can’t be that hard…I can do it myself
Many interior designers have been to college to study aesthetics and architecture – you can’t compete with four years of higher education and years of experience by flipping through a few home design magazines. Professionals will go beyond simple color matching and accessorizing in your rooms. They’ll use their expertise to help you design traffic patterns, seating arrangements, home organization and lighting…and they can recommend contractors for home improvements like flooring and cabinetry.
Give yourself permission to ask for help! It will save you money and hassle.
